James,
Great job and thanks for the ads/links................
A few more pics that may also help get the ponit accross--- the "factory" one shows why we grease... If not servived within 12 months or so, you may never get it apart..
The sludge, although is more than normal, is a product of fresh water condensation and oil mist-- actually these particular aftercoolers are serviced every year and have approx 8500 hours on them and are in excellent condition.............
Anything you'd like of mine that can help your readership is there for the asking/taking.
Also, my site will change to a new format shortly-- temp site is http://sbmar.com/SeaboardMarine/Index.cfm ( not to be used yet, but you can take a peek)
Thanks again, Tony

Bill,
I deal with dozens of high annual hour commercial guys that run 1000-3000 hrs a year.. This aftercooler was fairly typical of one that was removed from a high hour B or C w/ 5000 to 10,000 hours and has not been serviced for a couple of years--What was different is the mussels...The coating is a combo of oil, blow-by, sludge (water condensation mixed w/ oil) and we see this all the time, even from good running engines.. Engine rooms with marginal ventilation will show the oil coating sooner than with well ventilated ones------Guys with AirSeps that are not installed, serviced, and maintained properly are also at very high risk of "oil fouling" the aftercoolers. Worn turbo bearings/seals also add to the scenario-------------------- The engines are big vacuum cleaners, and if ventilation is poor, or any of the other aforementioned are not right , anything and everything will end up being drawn to the intake--The aftercooler will show the results.............And this applies to any color of engine..............
This particular aftercooler was just fine after servicing and came from a single engine commercial lobster boat..
On the other end of the coin are the low annual hour recreational boats that go years and NEVER have had their aftercooler properly serviced.. This gets very expensive.. WHY, because of marine age (3-5 years without service can make the aftercooler unserviceable as you cannot get it apart)... Just yesterday, we attempted to service a pair of 1500 hour old aftercoolers from 1998 370 Diamonds-- Never been serviced, or properly serviced, and the cores had corroded to the housing and were done........About $4000 later--Had these coolers been properly serviced within the first year ( best when new) and then properly serviced each year or so since new, then I would have considered them a 10-15 year piece of equipment regardless of hours..
So, word of caution to your readers. Regardless of engine hours, get those aftercoolers properly serviced within the first year since new, then every 1-2 yrs after that. The Cummins O&M Book is worthless as to this maintenance procedure--Just follow my guidelines on this and all will be fine..An added bonus for the engine, and especially aftercooler, is to flush your engine w/ fresh water when the boat is going to be sitting for weeks/months on end--Remember, 8700++ hours in the year--Where do you think the corrosion takes place? At the dock, or while fishing ?????................
Tony
