Certainly, almost everyone has read a book or seen a movie that presents a happy couple being united in blissful matrimony by a captain on board a ship. Indeed, who among us can ever forget the tense final scene of the movie "The African Queen" when Bogart and Hepburn delay their executions by having the German warship captain marry them?
But alas, as romantic and moving as such events may be, they are, at least on a U.S. vessel, the stuff of fiction. The realty is that captains in command of vessels flagged under most major modern countries do not have the authority to perform legally recognized marriage services. Moreover, my research seems to indicate that captains on U.S. vessels never had this authority. In fact, under the Code of Federal Regulations, those in command of military vessels are generally prohibited from performing weddings.

AquaAlarm, Exhaust Gas Temperature Alarm.
Dear Jim,
Thanks for the August Newsletter which caught my attention with the 41' SCA with the hardtop. I am unable to reach the Grooters and wonder with their permission, if I could call them. Please note also that I am enclosing an article on a new system by Aqualarm. What caught my attention was their title. Exhaust overheat alarm. The unit sends a signal to a warning panel, lighting the red light and sounding an audible alarm if wet exhaust temperatures exceed 200 degrees. Green light shows the unit is on. Bright red warning light. Loud audible buzzer. Adjustable aluminum band fits 2 to 8 inches exhaust hose. List $64.00, dealers $34.65. - - - AquaAlarm @
If more details are needed, I will supply you with the sources.
Love to Pat and the kids.

Racor Fuel Pump won't prime after changing filters.
Heres the head of the Racor pump. When I changed filters before putting the boat to bed, I couldn't prime the fuel system and purge the air. Neither could I gravity purge it, (I had less than a 1/4 tank at the time). I tried the black push pump, but it felt different than the first side that I had done. It felt as though the fuel check valve was not working. And after removing it I found out why. The check valve is on the 3 o'clock position on the bottom of the filter, (the black disk). Notice the black stringy thing, this is the goop that Maxum puts on the fuel lines when they put them together. Well, there was too much goop on this one, and it came down the fuel hose and into the Racor fuel head. It ended up blocking the check valve. When I removed it I actually found two of these strands. And this is not the first time I've found these, I also found a ball of this goop blocking the port intake elbow at the Racor about 3 years ago. Jim Clausen

EngineChek, Drop in Stainless Steel Screens:
And along comes this in an publication I was reading today.
Its a drop in stainless steel screen that places on the top of your oil filter.
Professional engine builders cut the oil filter apart after running a newly assembled engine the first time. They do this to study the filter element for trapped material. The type and material gives them a good indication of the internal condition of the engine. Race and fleet mechanics also perform this check periodically. As you can imagine, it's a real pain to cut apart a filter full of oil.
Engine Chek makes it easy for the home and professional mechanic alike to check for foreign material in the engine. Just remove and inspect the filter the next time you change your oil.
Particles of black carbon may mean excess blow-by or poor crankcase ventilation.

If the Engine Chek screen is clean, the engine is fine.
Abnormal wear of any of the engines internal components is represented on the Engine Chek screen as flakes or filings.
This allows us to repair the engine before it fails.
Small metal filings may indicate bearing, camshaft or lifter wear.

Black Flakes or Specs - carbon due to excessive blow by, indicative of
worn piston rings and/or faulty PCV valve or EGR valve.
Non-magnetic Silver-colored Flakes or Filings - excessive bearing wear.
Magnetic Silver-Colored Flakes or Filings - excessive valve train wear.
Bronze-colored Flakes or Filings - excessive wear of bushings or gears.
Plastic Flakes - excessive wear of cam gear and/or cam tensioner.

Injector Change Out report on 330B and 370B engines.
Since I gave out the information on the C series injector change, I have been asked if there is a B series change out that would give similar results. So I asked the Wavemaster this.
On the 450C series engines there is a "upgrade to the injectors" offered for engines with problems of excessive black soot. The upgrade is to change out the original 4 hole injector with the 5 hole injector used in the 480C. You supply the injector the owner picks up the labor.
My questions are:
Is there a similar program for owners of 330B and 370B engines.
Are the new 380B injectors compatible with the 370B?
Are the 380B injectors 5 hole?
Capt. James Clausen,
Thank you for contacting Cummins Marine/Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Wave
Master.
Your first statement is not correct. There is no program for changing out
injectors for any engine model. Each repair requiring an injector change
is done by individual determination.
The 380 engine is a QSB model. Quantum engines have a different fuel
system with electronically controlled injectors, and a common fuel rail.
These injectors are not compatible with the mechanical engines.
