" There isn't any symbolism. The sea is the sea. The old man is an old man.

The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The shark are all sharks no better and no worse.
All the symbolism that people say is shit. What goes beyond is what you see beyond when you know. "

Here we go.

Business first,
Electrical recall attempted on MV Summer School

This, according to US Marine is to be done in two parts, the first mailing you should have already gotten.

The first mailing covers the fusing (160 AMP) of the wires from each Starter motor to each Battery Isolator input on each engine, along with checking the boots on some exposed terminals, and the installation of sheathing on the alternator to the isolator on each engine. And or in the case of runs over 7" sheathing of the conductor from the battery source to the fuse terminal. Inverter fusing, (160 Amp) may, or may not be done with this installation.

The second mailing, (not yet sent out) addresses the Battery Chargers in line Fuses which should be placed at the battery end of the cable, within 7" of the battery terminal, and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed from the battery source to the fuse terminal. Inverter fusing should be done with this installation if not already addressed in the first recall. And Battery Isolator change out should be addressed at this time also. Our Starboard engine was not able to be done safely and will require rewiring back to the battery.

More on the electrical recall. Heres my own experience. I have had the folks from my local dealer down to "do" my boat. I told them I needed "5" fuses installed, and they needed to bring "5" fuses and fuse blocks. I spoke to the warranty man and the service manager. Both said no problem. I waited three weeks, no parts were in, I asked when they expected them, no definite answer. They did say that they were willing to borrow parts for another job to do mine. OK. I drive 110 miles to the boat to meet the teck at 8:30am, he shows up with (1) fuse and fuse block. Then he trys to locate the boats power distribution panel by opening the doors to the TV on the entertainment console. He explains to me that only one fuse is needed and he is going to install it at the battery disconnect switch.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Diesel boats need at least 4 fuses, 5 if you have an inverter.

1 fuse needs to be installed within 7" of the Port starter motors power post, and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed, in line with the power cable that comes from the battery isolator. Sheathing needs to be added from the alternators power output wire to the battery isolator. Fuse size 160 Amp.

1 fuse needs to be installed within 7" of the Starboard starter motors power post, and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed, in line with the power cable that comes from the battery isolator. Sheathing needs to be added from the alternators power output wire to the battery isolator. Fuse size 160 Amp, (Note: The amount of sheathing supplied in the "kit" was inadequate to run from the Starboard alternator to the Battery Isolator, the teck will have to order additional sheathing and come back to do the installation, new, larger hanging clips may also be required.)

1 fuse need to be installed within 7", and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed, from the Starting Batteries positive connection post that runs to the battery charger.

1 fuse need to be installed within 7" , and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed, from the House Batteries positive connection post that runs to the battery charger.

1 fuse may need to be installed within 7", and can be up to 40" maximum if sheathed, from the Inverters positive connection post that runs to the battery isolator. In the case of a 4600 SCB the power is taken from the 300 AMP battery switch.

The installer should check that the terminals on the Battery Charger, Battery Isolator, and Windless to insure that they all have protective rubber boots on them. The Battery Isolator should be replaced and upgraded.

(Note: US Marine is not supplying any cable with the kits, they are supplying lugs, the installer need a crimping tool with the proper "die" and the proper size red wire to do the installation. Red #2 wire is used for the engine runs. Vice grips and the wrong size or grade wire will not do. Battery charger wiring looks like #6 or #8. Be sure the teck uses only "marine grade" wire that is stranded copper and tin plated. Boots should be installed on the fuse block terminal. The installer will need additional lugs, sheathing and wire to do the job properly.

Kits contain only (1) fuse and (1) fuse block, 2 lugs and a couple feet of sheathing, some installers have ordered one kit for the entire boat, and installed the one kit and left the boat. Unfortunately, you must be the inspector here. From what I have seen, I expect well over 50% of the installs to be wrong.

3 days in the yard for a Maxum 4600

Reposition pump out from Starboard Deck to Portside Deck.
Attempt to install (2) new dip tubes into existing waste tank, (this failed for the second time)
Install new aeration unit in top of waste tank, center of photo, supplied by owner.
This change removed the old blue stripe hose from the deck fitting to the tank, about 16-17' of hose. That was replaced with about 8' of red stripe hose all on a downward slant.

The refrigerator has to be removed to access top of holding tank. We palnned to do cutouts under the refrigerator to access top of the holding tank. The dip tube cannot bend and has to go in vertical, there is insufficient clearance on top of the tank without attacking it from above, even so the tank is actually located under the kitchen floor, not the refrigerator, so the dip tube installation was a non event. With the refrigerator removed the side deck was right there and made the new pump out fitting easy. A deck repair was done where the original waste fitting was. And a new 110vac power outlet for the new waste tank airator wasinstalled in the pump room, the power was taken from the refrigerator circuit.

Replace shower sump with new Attwood Shower Sump. I have repaired the original one (4 times) and then replaced the entire shower Johnson shower sump (1 time) with the exact same model Johnson shower sump. The floats seams to fail, when I took the floats apart it was apparent that water had crept into the sealed switch. So its time to give Attwood a chance, purchased from West Marine.

Fabricate and install new mount for transporting 5 hp outboard on stern. We attempted to remove the inboard locker, which was a big mistake. We ended up putting in a 6" excess plate in the locker, which was much easier.

Add two water drains to stern hatch, for a total of four drains.
And added a gasket to the top of the hatch, K-Profile 1/8" thick weatherstrip, from Home Depot.

Westerbeke service,
New impeller, thermostat gasket, & heat exchanger end gaskets, and zinc.
New diesel filters (2) replace leaking and cracked overflow hose to reservoir.

Add air dam to living room AC unit in an attempt to make it a sealed closed system. Using flexible insulation to make the air dam. This blocks 90% of the air from the rear of the sofa and engine room from being pulled through the AC system. Install new electrostatic filters in the air intakes, this cost about $10.00. You trim the filter to fit, one filter does all 4 intake vents, and its reusable, clean with water. Spray "Bio Clear" antimicrobial cleaner into the coils, condensate pan and ductwork. Both the filter and Bio Clear are available from Home Depot. Febreze also helps to control oder.

New filter vs Old

Inspect and replace 6 Cummins engine zincs and "rod out" the heat exchangers. (3/16" brass rod from a hobby store, the Westerbeke need 1/8" brass rod to clean the heat exchanger)

Replace 18' of main engine 2" intake hose with "Shield's" brand intake hose. The old hose was cracked on the exterior since delivery, and would not stand a survey. The interior was fine, but it looked just awful.

Install 3M mailing tape onto the upright Vinyl post to protect it from the sliding doors aluminum bars rubbing and tearing it. The same was done to the main cabin doors curtain pull cord .

Master Mariners:

Our Master Mariners know all there is to know about their boats and share their knowledge with other owners of the same model boats, They are the repository of knowledge about the boat. The smaller the boat the easier it is to know. Some of our Master Mariners get E-mailed monthly, some once and quarter. Usually they are people who have owned boats before and plan on keep this particular boat for a while.
There are still a few models open, are you interested?

Recliner moves aboard:

I have always missed having a recliner aboard our 4600. So much so that I thought about removing 1/2 of the couch. Where do you find such a thing? What's the answer? http://www.foldingrecliners.com Of course!

I bought two and they both fit topsides, facing forward, and both have enough room to recline.
Yes these are my 2 youngest girls.
