Here we go.
Business first,
Well, I've been down to IBEX, the boatbuilders show in Ft. Lauderdale this past month for 3 days, took seminars and everything. I also found out the following:
Dash Panels, Galvanic Corrosion and Blistering, Replacements:
Originally made by Technographics, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. 954-928-1714, Marc Belhoste President, Dan Scola Sales
Technographics is doing a bit of finger pointing and I'll skip that, as some of you have told me SeaRay dash panels are of a hard plastic material, Technographics says they can and do produce this material in our shape, in our look. They seam un interested in holding stock for us, and the costs of and short run in quantitys of ones and twos will be high. But it can be done, remember AFM, Anything For Money.
Cummins Diesels: "Upgraded 17000 Series Pump"
Sherwood Pumps makes the seawater pumps for our Cummins Diesel engines. We all basicly use the 17000 series with different elbows. Sherwood in the first or second quarter of 2003 will come out with a replacement pump that cures the problems some of us have found with the original pumps. It's called, "Upgraded 17000 Series Pump" very basic name eh? Its shown in the Sherwood catalogue form 3022. A good alternative to a complete rebuild.

Plumbing friction connectors:
This year there is finally an alternative to compression connectors for 1/2" plastic tubing used in our original boats, that is the 1/2" quick connect, just push it together and your done. It works with 1/2" copper pipe, 1/2" plastic tube etc, very slick. Removal? Just depress the interior ring and pull apart, recently built Maxum Boats use this system but they currently use use 15mm tubing. They look the same. No, they are not interchangeable. Yes, they both work the same way. You tell them apart by reading the size on the pipe.
Engine Tacks:
I stopped by Firia Instruments, 860-848-9271 and asked about an electronic replacements for our Tacks, and/or a Fuel monitoring system. Reguarding a exact, or close replacement, nothing is available yet.
Fuel Tanks:
I stopped by our fuel tank manufacturer, and asked about the location of baffles inside of our fuel tanks. (for fuel cleaning and polishing reasons). They siad there was only one baffle and it was located in the center of the tank with dual openings at the bottoms and the tops in the corners.

Owner Moving South
Hi Captain Jim,
I have emailed you before about MAXUM boating groups in FL. To refresh
your memory, we have a 1999 3700 SCR which we keep on the Mississippi
River and really love. We are heading to Manasota Key on the SW FL coast
on the first of March. Becky and I are wondering if there are any
members in that area (Ft. Meyers to Sarasota) that we might visit with
about boating MAXUM style on the SW coast.
Thank you very much for all your efforts in promoting the MOG. I would
like to become a paying member. Can you also send me info on that.
Best Regards.

Jim,
Thanks for the information on the website. I have a question about my
propeller sizing that I might get help from other boat owner. I have a 1999
Maxum 41 SCB, owned since new, I have 330 Cummins and are swinging 24x23 4
bladed props. My max speed is about 19 knots. A friend of mine have the
identical setup in a 41 SCA and does 2-3 knots faster swinging 24x26 4 bladed
props. Has anyone tried different props on the 41 SCB to give me any
feedback.
Thanks

Master Mariners:
Our Master Mariners know all there is to know about their boats and share their knowledge with other owners of the same model boats, They are the repository of knowledge about the boat. The smaller the boat the easier it is to know. Some of our Master Mariners get E-mailed monthly, some once and quarter. Usually they are people who have owned boats before and plan on keep this particular boat for a while.
There are still a few models open, are you interested?

Refrigerator Replacements:
Praise the lord we now have choices! So your Norcold DE 461 has chilled it last beer.
Not to fear, you no longer have to reinstall the same old Norcold refrigerator.
You have choices.
There is the Tundra T80AC
and
The Waeco Coolmatic RPD-1190
or
you can reinstall another Norcold DE 461
I've seen them all at the IBEX show. Pricing is about the same, all are made to fit the same hole as your existing Norcold, I thought I had a preferred unit in mind, but I really don't. The Tundra is made very similar to the Norcold and has the cooling plate as the base of the freezer unit. The Waeco has a molded freezer lining and no exposed plates. I like that. I also liked that it uses the Danfoss compressor. There quite a bit I don't know and did not fully compare all three, so no firm recommendation on who the winner is here.
And this from Brian Will

Jim,
Thanks for checking on this for me. I've settled on an AC refrigerator only
unit that has 5.2 cu/ft and a light inside. It also only cost $199 at Costco.
It fits into the lower opening for the refrigerator perfectly. I'm installing
shelves above that (where the freezer used to be). I'll post pictures to the
website when it's finished.
On the boat front, Maxum came thru pretty well. To summarize, they covered the
blister repair which involved peeling all the gelcoat and replacing it with
two layers of vinylester resin. I paid for the epoxy barrier coat and bottom
paint.
With regards to the hole, Maxum fixed the hole and has agreed in writing to
warranty the stringer against rot for as long as I own the boat (not
transferrable). This sounds like a reasonable solution to me, what do you
think?
Long term, Martha and I want to keep this boat and eventually move it to the
Southeast US somewhere. When I do that, I planned on pulling the gas engines
and putting in a couple of diesels, probably the Cat 3126B or the Cummins 480C-
E. Would you do that, or simply buy a diesel boat already at the coast? The
benefits to keeping the one we have is that it still looks new since it's kept
in freshwater and under a covered slip, and we have the stringer warranty.
Also, I like what I'm seeing with the new electronic diesels.
Thanks again for the info Jim, please stay in touch.
Regards,
Brian Will
> Refrigerator Replacements
Brian It sounds like you've gotten very comfortable with your boat, I know the feeling. I suspect the diesel retro fit with the engines in that hp range will cost every bit of 90 to 100K and will add to makeing your boat one of a kind and tough on the resale. If you lower the hp to 250 or so you could get great range, economy and have plenty of service room and be in at nearer 50k. Since I'm getting older and time is more important than money, (who said that) I might consider looking for another boat, as hard as that sounds. Or just keep the gas engines and pay for it at the pumps.
I'd love to see the photos of the refrigerator when you are done. The stringer warranty sounds fair, although you will have to disclose it to any buyer when you sell the boat. Jc

Fuel Polishing

Subject: Question ?
James, I am wanting to install a "Fuel Polisher" on board on my 46 SCB. As
you know, accessing thru the top of the fuel tanks would be out of the
question. What would be your thoughts of putting a feed line thru the inside
wall of each tank at the upper forward corner? Can I drill a hole without
totally emptying the tanks, and what would you use to put a feed line to get
within a few inches of the bottom of the tank. would appreciate any
feedback. Thanks, Joe Salvione P.S. are you doing anything at the the Miami
Show?
I was at the IBEX show last week and saw a fuel polisher.
You can see it @ www.separfilter.com
Let me know what you think. No, no miami for me this year, just IBEX.
Drilling holes in fuel tanks will allow the chips to fall into the tanks, and if you do add another hole the tank should be pressure tested to ensure there are no leaks. I stopped by the booth of our fuel tank manufacturer and asked about the baffling installed inside of our tanks. They said there is only one baffle, it is installed in the center with (4) curved fuel openings, 2 in the top, 2 in the bottom, all on the edges. Useful information if you are having the fuel polished. I would like to perswade you not to mess with the fuel tank. The liability issue is just too high. I have a bit of water in my Starboard tank and I feel I know where it came from. Dirty Fuel on the Ohio River. We all have some. Condensation, especially in Florida does it. I use a biocide in the tank yearly which I hope may to help prevent this, of course using the boat does wonders. Not using the boat and leaving the tanks less then 7/8 full will certianly add to the problem. I have a Diesel transfer pump and was thinking of hooking it up to a Racor 1000 filter with some poly hoses and tying to perge the tanks myself yearly. I gave that up when I considerd how much of a problem a fule spill would cause. I did not want to be the one holding the gear when the puddle formed. A pro will come down and for about $200. to $350. and do the job on the boat. With a Diesel you have a line into the injector pump and a line back from that pump back to the fuel tank, via the fuel cooler. The injector pump heats the fuel from the pressure it runs at. The fuel cooler makes the world right again. So in essence you have a polishing system already installed. Fuel polishing is vastly more important for a trawller with 800 gallons, who may take a year or two to run through that amount of fuel. Fuel does go stale, and grow nasty crud in the tanks. I am interested in fuel polishing also, but my present plan calls for burning fuel to polish it and checking the racor bowl and draining the water as necessary. Jc

Perko Hinge Material
Ron I got your phone message, I E-mailed Perko and asked what material their pin was made of. When I know you will know. The hinge itself is Perko # 1002 007, 3" high x 2" wide, butt hinge, made of heavy gauge extruded brass and chrome plated, with a "fast pin," material of the pin was not specified. Maxum used loads of these hinges, I always thought they were of an excellent quality. Jc

As an FYI here is what I found with regard to the plastic water seal (Maxum's name)that is sewn onto the canvas and attaches to the windscreen. The Maxum part number is 171-47-47 and is sold by the foot. This part number has two grooves. The manufacturer is Taylor Made out of Bradenton, Florida. They have stopped making the two groove sure seal (Taylor's name ) and now manufacture a single groove material that performs the same function. The Taylor part number is 14-505.

Bob
I have no idea ! mine is also a 98, purchased dec 98 and the side curtains finally fell apart (clear vinyl brown and craking) a few months ago. I've had the top restiched about 2 years ago and some stitches started to go already. Instead of spending thousands ( I was quoted 3k down here in Miami ) I have now replaced the top with 1/4" starboard XL, very light tan color. I used the existing frame to hold the new top. no more leaky sunbrella and stitches falling apart...
For the 4 side curtains, I have replaced the vinyl with 1/8 Lexan, which is great because it is much more clear, distortion free. Looks clean.
I am about to tackle the front curtain, above the windshield... tricky since it has to open... I've got a few ideas I'm going to try also using lexan. But with a thin alum. Frame.... If it's too hard, I will go back to vinyl and will need this strip too.

Subject: Canvas
Hi, my name is Bob Mazza and I have 1998, 3700. I got your name from the Maxum web site. I have a question on the canvas.
I am having the canvas replaced this spring. The canvas on my boat does not snap onto the windscreen. It attached with a weather strip like flexible rubber material much like upper ware. Do you have any idea where I might purchase this material? I am afraid my canvas guy will not be able to locate this material to attach the canvas to the windscreen.
Thanks, Bob Mazza

It has been raining quite a bit on the east coast of Florida. Tonight we discovered a leak in the master head. It is coming through the light over the sink. We have a 46' SCB. Do you have any ideas where this leak may be originating.
Thanks for your help, As always, Myon Wang
P.S. Please note my new email address: SLIMMREDD@aol.com
You can remove the medicine cabinet, 4 screws if I remember correctly and reach above, and or look above with a light and mirror. I would look at the window seals, grab rails around the sun mat, and especially the snaps in the window frames, the galvanic corrosion may have caused a small void and its letting in water. We've had this type of problem in another area, hard to track down when dry, close to impossible when wet.
