Where's the smell coming from?
Here's one way to locate it. The culprit should, in most cases be the waste hose, but here's how to confirm it, and feel comfortable with your conclusion. Rub your hand on your boats carpet till it get warm. Smell your hand, now rub your hand on your suspect waste hose till it gets warm, smell your hand.

4100 SCA - 1999 Q&A

Hi James,
Have something to ask an opinion about. I have 2 circular access "7" hatches" on the hardtop on the outside of the hardtop. These are not inside the aft-cabin sitting area. I called Bill Joseph at Maxum and he says Maxum puts the access hatches on the inside of the aft area or on the inside part of the hard top. He does not understand why anyone would put these exposed to the elements. One leaks for sure.
Is he shooting straight with me? I'm concerned about the QA of this boat and perhaps someone put these on the top of the hardtop instead of underneath the hardtop.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi James, Just purchased a 41 SCA - 1999 and water leaks are my biggest concerns at this time. Two major areas of leaks. Forward cabin near foot of bed. Water was running through top of starboard closet onto floor in forward bedroom. Come to find out, all of the forward windows were leaking...not around metal caseing, but through black rubber seals on the outside, then inside the felt support. Then the water was traveling in the head liner to the closet. The headliner support "plywood" was delimitated as a result and this is why the water is discolored. I called in a marine glass expert and he took off all of the outside seals and recaulked the windows last week....all is well. Cost was about $600, but this guy was great. 2nd problem..still persist. Leak in headliner in aft cabin, coke colored water. Tremendous water storage/leak in aft-hard top where radar is attached. Am trouble shooting now. Water must go through radar arch, to fly bridge level, to stair way (to fly bridge) mold. Very difficult problem. Just sealing everything on hard top to stop leak at source. Will let you know how it turns out. Problem must be found at source or hardtop will eventually delaminate. Thanks for the information on the newsletter. Let me know you feelings. Glenn Roy -Mandeville, LA glenn111@bellsouth.net
Glenn, I am forwarding this to our 4100 SCA Master Mariner, Robert Cephas, for his feedback to us both. The coke colored water is an is a Maxum tradition, it comes when water is trapped between and held in the sandwich between fiberglass layers. Usually a roof and ceiling. The best method of eliminating it is to find and cure the leak, such as from the radar arch as one of our 4100 SCA owners has found, a second option is to drill weep holes so the nasty coke water can drip out in the low spot of the sandwich, usually in the stern or sides of the structure. You are not alone.

Just an update, I talked to the company that installed the radar on the hardtop. He told me the owner asked for him to put circular access holes on top of hardtop. This was not done at MAXUM plant.
Glenn
PS. A buddy of mine has a '99 SCB. He know everything about the boat. Has done fiberglass, mechanical, etc., repairs. Will see if he wants to take up that responsibility.

Cross Bracing Waterlogged

I can help with your request for people with 4100 SCB Maxum. I have a 1998 and have been through several problems with it and I have made several modification so that it is easier to store stuff and better balanced under way. The latest problem is that the cross braces in the bilge are water logged. Seems Maxum never get coated the hole they cut out for water to travel to the pumps. The forward bulkhead is also water logged. Maxum is soooooooooo very slow to belly up that I am considering selling the boat. If you have any questions or would like my help contact me at BGTJIMH@AOL.COM.
Jim Hiendlmayr
Jim, yes, yes, yes.
And Thank You. The waterlogged cross braces are a product liability issue also, which is a very long time frame in the state court systems. I will update the website to show you as the Master Mariner for the 4100 SCB.
Maxum Owners: Please check your boats, this is the third person with waterlogged cross braces. And it again comes from weep holes, (drain holes) through the cross bracing that were left exposed to water, improperly sealed during manufacture. With a hammer, rap the cross braces in the area of any weep holes. The sound should be sold and firm. Inspect that the weep holes have been coated and sealed with a mirror and flashlight.

2002, 3500 SCR w/ twin Merc 6.2 MXs
In a message dated 12/11/02 2:17:57 PM, bgn@mrfuton.com writes:
Hi James,
Ill try and make a long story short. (but I do need to vent)
We took delivery of our 2002 3500 SCR w/ twin Merc 6.2 MXs on February 26th. Performance thru the summer was ok but late in the fall we had noticed an increase in fuel consumption on the STBD motor and its inability to reach its WOT (5000RPM). Bottom was clean as well as running gear. We called in a Merc. Mechanic who began to troubleshoot.
He pulled the plugs and found rust on all 8 but found no water in any of the cylinders. Compression was good on all 8 but the distance and angle of decline from the riser to the exhaust port was called into question by Mercruiser. New plugs were installed and after 1.5 hours of use started to show signs of rust. A leak down test was performed and it revealed that one cylinder had a 40% drop. Mercruiser asked that the engine be pull and torn down to inspect the heads and cylinders for damage and repair/replace as needed (which the mechanic cant do until some time in January).
VERY unhappy with the prospect of a rebuilt engine in my brand new boat I went to the dealer, The Yacht Center, and made my case for a new engine. All seemed to be going well, the Yacht Center contact Kenny Richardson on Maxum who in turn contacted Merc and a new engine looked like it was on its way... But wait...
I get a call today from the dealer who explains that Merc wont authorize the new engine until its determined what exactly is wrong with it. Ridiculous! They have all but said that the water intrusion is due to the exhaust set up (a Merc employee is coming to inspect mine next week).
This should not be that complicated. We know that there is a water intrusion problem. We know that the engine has to come out and be torn down. We know that there will be damage of some sort that will require either a head rebuild, damaged pistons/cylinders, valve damage OR all of the above. We know that a rebuilt engine/parts is unacceptable on an engine this new. All I want is a factory new engine and 6 riser blocks (which Merc has already recommended for both engines).
So, I have been without my boat for almost 45 days so far. We have had to cancel all of our winter boating plans. The engine can't be pulled until sometime in January. It will take another 30 days to dissect it and 30 on top of that to get Merc/Maxum to get a new motor in my boat. The dealer is willing and has the facilities to swap the engines NOW but Maxum and Merc won't except the fact that we have a defective product that needs to be replaced.
Our worst fears are coming true. We bought a new boat that has developed serious problems and no one is willing to step up to the service plate and fix it. If this continues much longer we may just call it quits.

Jim, Happy New Year.
As always there are two side of a story. We have talked with Kenny Richardson
regarding this matter and we are of the opinion he is taking the correct
steps in helping resolve the customers concerns. This has been, and
continues to be a MeCruiser warranty issue.
A call was placed to the Salisbury plant by the selling dealer , The Yacht
Center asking for assistance in expediting a service response from
MerCruiser. . Kenny called MeCruiser and spoke with our OEM contact . He
ask for someone to contact the marina where the customer had his boat at
and see if they could light a fire under them and provide assistance in
helping resolving this matter quickly for the customer. MerCruiser has done
what we have asked and we authorized them to pull the engine and disassemble it
to determine the cause of the failure. We have been told a field rep from
MerCruiser will be into the marina the second week of January to inspect
the engine.
In the conversation Kenny had with the customer, he told him what his
selling dealer had asked of him and what calls he had placed and to whom and
the time frame in which MerCruiser would be addressing the issues. The
customer was at that time okay with that response. Then Kenny ask Mr Nord
if he would like him to call his marina to see if he could help expedited
the repairs and was told there would be no need at this time and he would
let him know if Kenny's help would be needed in the future..and thank him.
You need to understand this is a MerCruise issue and they will make the
final decision on how these repairs will be address. If we can be of more
help please do not hesitate to let us know
Sincerely,
Matt Thostenson

Use them for Sherwood parts such as impellers, impeller pullers, re-builders of Cummins Seawater pumps, your freshwater or wash down pumps. Nice folks, quick turnaround. Reasonable pricing. If it pumps Depco can fix it.

Were you aware that the boat manufacturer can charge the model year of the boat after it was manufactured? They can, and it is legal. Here's one of the ways it can and does happen. If a manufacturer builds a boat in December of 2000, it is a 2001 model. Model years start March to May of the previous year, which is somewhat similar to Automobiles. The last three digits of the hull # would be 001, But if the boat is kept in the manufacturers yard, and not titled or offered for sale or shown at a boat show. The manufacturer has the right to re-serialize the boat to the next model year, if doing so they will usually make the appropriate changes in fabric, etc., to the interior, but are not obligated to do so. So how do you tell? You can usually see the grind and reapply of a changed serial hull number in the stern molded in MIC number. In the above case, the new number would be 002. Taking over a year to build a production boat is a dead give away. Does it matter? You be the judge.

Cracked Stern Gate
Cracked Stern Gate on a 4600 SCB, I thought this was part of the 5 year Hull warranty, but I'm told I was incorrect and I guess since this is above the waterline it's not the hull. I'm at least the 3d owner of a Maxum to have this happen to them.
Heres the crack, it runs across the full length of the top of the gate door.

Leaks into the bilge
Heres where I found one of my most recent bilge leaks, its the shower drain. It was either put on cross threaded or became that way. It was leaking for over 3 years before I tracked it down.
