Cold Weather Diesel Starting:

As the owner of a Maxum 41 ft. I have sought to keep my boat and it engine in the best shape. There are two elements that are always against you: Money and Time.
Many of the features that are incorporated in our boats (the outboard things like filters on the starboard engine, the water pump on the port engine, EMC and its components and the starter on the starboard engine) are hard to reach.

If you have alot of money you can have a service man do the work, (but in doing so you miss the joys of speaking in tongues while placing your body in a space that no human body should go.)
This month I would like to talk about a Problem that I encountered near the end of the boating season and some of the solutions I found.

The pre heat light did not come on when the ignition was turned on.
Did the bulb burn out?
Did a wire come loose?
Did one of the relays burn out?
Did the EMC quit? ($800.) (Did you know about the 10 amp fuse on the port engine harness block?)
Did the heater quit?

I have enclosed two pages of the Diagrams that will help you understand the many components of this system for B and C Cummings engines.

The engine that powers your boat suffer considerable damage when they are operated with col-thickened oil. Popular all season engine oils typically have a pour point of –25 F. Basically speaking, below that temperature the oil becomes too thick to flow

Another factor you should consider during cold weather operations, these same oils reach their rated Borderline Pumping Temperatures at about –2 F. Pumpabilty becomes questionable.
Execessive time is required to build oil pressure in an engine. This time to pressure gap can often exceed 30 seconds.

Operating an engine without immediate oil flow is the major factor affecting its service life. Further, an unheated engine produces harmful exhaust emissions. When engine oil is preheated to near its normal operating level, heat rise off this oil and the important internal moving parts are cushion. The results are a substantial reduction in cold cushion related drag (rotational resistance). The engine enjoys improved Carnkability with higher crankshaft speed during the start up.

Page three is a product that I am planning to use in place of the Cummings Heat Air System.

4600 SCB in Distress!
Help to the Rescue

Jim, last I saw you, you were on your 4600 SCB at South Seas Plantation. After Charlie, South Seas Plantation was pretty well destroyed. They are still cleaning up. Marina is open for fuel, and they expect to have the resort operating again by January of 06.

I wasn't so lucky either with "Wilma". A 59 Hatteras next to our 4600 SCB "Sea Sleigh" broke her lines and her stern crushed the port side of our boat. Serious damage to the rub rail, walk-around, stainless, window, and interior entertainment center. Pictures attached.

The Sea Sleigh is in the yard now, but they are having trouble getting a response from Maxum on possibly getting the factory to make up a section from the original molds. This would be much better than trying to build a piece from scratch.

Anyone at the factory you know who could help me on this? Assume they still have the 4600 SCB jigs.

MAXUM 4600 damage during "Wilma"

Well, Steve and I talked, and I offered the use of my 4600 SCB to make his molds.

My boat was in inside heated storage, @ Winter Harbor, just above Syracuse, NY on the Erie Canal.

My only stipulation was that the Winter Harbor staff had to do the work making the molds.

I knew them and trusted them. Well, it turned out that Jim from Winter Harbor flew down to Florida,

and surveyed the damage personally, they bid on the repair and in the photos below, you can see the new

molds ready to be packed into their 40' trailer and with a crew of seven, will drive to Florida to install the molds

and make the boat whole again. With all the damage to boats in Florida and the gulf, there are nowhere near

enough craftsmen to go around. And without this exceptional effort, Sea Sleigh might be high and dry for well

over a year awaiting repairs.
