Input on the social side of FL MAXUM ownership?

Hi Jim,

I appreciate all your hard work in making the Owners Group the success
that it is. I am the owner of a 1999 3700 SCR. As a Minnesota native
who is 60 years old and interested in retiring to Florida, I am
interested to find out if there are group boating activities with other
members of the MAXUM family, such as excursions to the Bahamas, the Keys,
etc. I know the Sea Ray dealers in FL that I have visited really tout
this aspect of owning a Sea Ray. I know your website is more technical
in nature, but I would appreciate your input on the social side of FL
MAXUM ownership.

Thanks, Jim. I'm sending my $75 for membership and look forward to the
association.

Best Regards, mailto:cbiesanz@hbci.com

No problem Charlie. From my experience the social aspects of boating are served by the local Yacht Club. And if you're moving to Florida you have a vast choice of which ones to choose from. All "Florida Council of Yacht Clubs" are reciprocal, and you "sign" and get billed by your home club. As for Maxum activities, there have been some, but they have been spotty, usually hosted by the selling dealer in the hopes of a new sale. Maxum has done nothing, and I expect that to continue. Their marketing, or lack there of, amazes me. Heres a list of the clubs you want to look into. Jc

Hi James,

Went through the 18 pages very carefully. My sincere thanks to you for your work in pulling together what seems to have been a massive effort.

In using the USCG recall database I was able to pick out what I believe to be the only applicable items for my 2000 Maxum 4100 SCB, MXYA02YBD900. They are issues #2 and #3 of recall 020111S. I found this by using MIC BLB. When I inputted MXY, there was nothing listed.

To support the effort I now plan to email US Marine insofar as the areas where I think my boat might be in noncompliance, My only contact is Kenny Richardson the Maxum Parts & Service Mgr. Is there anyone else from US Marine that you suggest that I include?

I'll keep you posted on my progress. The more of us that get behind this, the better.

Nick

Hello James,

Want to tidy up a couple of loose ends.

First, I have sold the JVC 12-Disc CD Changer. You can therefore delete it from the Maxum newsletter sale listing. I do indeed thank you for your help.

Secondly, you and our fraternity of Maxum brothers should be made aware that I never even got the courtesy of a reply to my October 23, 2002, letter of complaint to Westerbeke. You may recall I wrote them a letter detailing the extensive corrosion I had with the diesel generator enclosure. You were kind enough to publish it. NOT EVEN A REPLY! Tells you a bit about the kind of company we're dealing with doesn't it?

Cheers, Nick

Well, Maxum's not making many of the big boats anymore, and Westerbeke is not supplying gen sets to Maxum. Even so, I agree with you, poor company policy, I'll be down at IBEX in Ft, Lauderdale next week, I'll ask Westerbeke whats up with them. Jc

Oil change on Cummins 330B Engines in a 4100 SCA

Bob, I have the 330Bs in my 4100 and would like to change the fuel filters. I do not have remote filters so the port side seems like the engine will have to come out first to change the filter. Have you or do you know of anyone that has replaced there port fuel filter? There must be a simple way! Thanks
Mark A. Rust

Hello Mark---The port fuel filter change is a piece of cake. The prerequisites for this job is as follows: assemble your tools and support material to include a proper sized filter wrench, a one gallon empty household plastic bleach bottle with the top cut off, rags to catch any spills, a replacement filter, and if available, a skinny mongoose from Mexico. Practice the filter change on the starboard engine first. The plastic bleach bottle is recommended because it is made of virgin plastic and will not desolve when diesel fuel comes in contact with it. Most plastic bottles or jugs are made of recycled plastic and will not hold up to strong chemicals. Break the filter loose with the filter wrench but don't allow any fuel to leak yet. Remove the filter wrench and slide the plastic jug over the filter to catch spills. Unscrew the filter and let it fall into the jug. Use rags to mop up fuel drips as you remove the jug with the filter in it. Wet the rubber seal on the new filter with oil from the engines dip stick and screw it in place as tight as you can get it by hand. No further tightening is necessary. To complete this job on the port engine is more difficult because you are going to have to squeeze into the compartment forward of the port engine and reach around the outboard side of the port engine to complete the filter change. With a little practice, you will find this job is not so bad. While you are wedged into the compartment forward of the port engine, inspect the three brackets that hold the engines belt cover in place. Look for cracks along the brackets. This is a common problem with the Cummins diesels and if cracks are evident on either engine, Cummins will replace the belt covers at no charge to you. Call me at (302)368-1467. many, many more checks, inspections and adjustments should be done if you are into your periodic maintenance cycle.

Washer Dryer in a 4600 SCB, this is a first!

Hi ya, James thought you'd probably like an up date ,,,, basically the boat although new had several jobs to do under "warranty work" and a few that I wanted in addition,,, nothing spectacular except perhaps the washing machine.... Basically the lazarrette needed re-flooring generator re-positioning and washer/dryer installing the cost at present I'm not quite sure as I have not received my invoice (I will scan in and forward it on) but for those who wish to enquire could contact Gene weeks @ thundermarine on 727 391 3848 The washer dryer was purchased via the web www.compactappliances.com and cost $679.00 instalation was estimated at $1,000 if it keeps the wife happy then so be it!
flying out in two weeks!

We decided to name our 4600SCB LE "Duty Free"

Carbon Monoxide

There is a bit of a myth that diesel engines do not create Carbon monoxide. Complete combustion would give Carbon Dioxide, water, some particulate matter, and some nitrides of ox gen. Unfortunately there is no engine with complete combustion and some C O is produced by all internal combustion engines. Generally gas engines produce more CO-one of the reasons a diesel normally produces less CO is that there is higher air flow and more efficient use of fuel. However if a diesel is air restricted or fuel rich in its set up, it will produce significant amounts of CO. Also remember than Carbon Monoxide binds with the hemoglobin in the human blood and displaces oxygen--and this is what causes death. The CO accumulation can be very slow. I have seen and treated a number of cases of both acute and chronic CO poisoning--including in cigarette smokers and people who lived near the Los Angles Freeways-(always live on the water side of PCH, since the normal Westerlies blow the smog--and CO into the interior of the Los Angeles Basin.)

An example three years ago was where we were on a cruise and several of the boats left their gensets on, to run the Air Conditioners. All of the boat owners were on my boat and we heard an alarm going off. We took off in the skiff to find out what was wrong. It turned out it was a genset where the exhaust hose had come loose, and the Carbon Monoxide detector had gone off! There was a dog aboard--and he had gone into the aft cabin where he had found a window open. Three of went aboard. We were not able to stop the genset with the remote (water on the controls relay)-I have cardiac disease and had a slight head ache and angina in about 3 minutes. (First thing I did was get the dog out). The owner stayed out for another 5 minutes but was concerned with water and soot damage, so he went back in and went it to the engine room to cut the air supply to the genset. He had moderate symptoms of acute Carbon Monoxide poisoning, which resolved in the next few hours by themselves.

The key here is that low concentrations--even those in proximity to the freeways--or people in traffic--will have a rise in C O levels.

To answer your questions--a diesel is retaliatively safer--however any boat should have carbon monoxide detectors. Some of the older sensors are more sensative--and a less sensitive unit was substituted because of "false alarms" answered by fire departments and paramedics. (changed in 1997, so probably none of the old standard units are still available).....C O detectors wear out and should be replaced every few years. Carbon monoxide is cumulative, so a detector that measures that total accumulation is essential.

I personally do not leave a boat with a genset running. I also will cool the boat down before I go to sleep. If I wake up hot at night--I turn on the fans and open the hatches (with screens). More common causes of C O poisoning are charcoal burning heaters or barbecues, furnaces, open space heaters, open flames, such as a gas or propane stove, or wood fires in unventilated areas.

For a brief review of detectors go to :

Dash blistering & interior leak

Hi Jim,

I've spoken with you before. Enjoyed meeting you in Miami two years ago. I'm planning on going this year, will you be there? My boat is back in Stuart this year at the Hinckley yard in the Manatee Pocket.

I have two issues that have been bothering me that I want to ask you about:

1. We have spoken before and I know that most owners are putting up with the pitted dash/corrosion problem. Well last year I had to replace the right lower panel to accommodate a new Northstar 951 GPS (a really great unit by the way I never did like the Raytheon 620). Well anyway, when we cut the panel for the GPS, which cost $250 from Maxum, we were very careful to coat all the edges, including the screw hole openings. Well even with that and with this being a new and improved panel, it now has the same signs of bubbling etc. in just about one year. Remember also that this is a fairly well protected location.

I was helping a friend transport a 40' SeaRay, and noticed his woodgrained dash panels were fiberglass. Do you know anyone who has replaced the panels with fiberglass, or an electronics installer in South Florida who might do a job like that? I'm really sick of this problem, and I want to do something to permanently fix it.

Also, I have never been a big fan of the flat switches that they use. They seem to be real vulnerable to spray. Any idea about a more seaworthy switch that I could use as long as I'm planning on tackling this project?

On a somewhat related topic, I'm getting real tired of looking at those Taylor window trim pieces that have the same bubbling up of their baked powder finish. Have you tackled refinishing those? Looks like a scrape and refinish project I guess.

2. I have been putting up with a leak into the cabinet in the galley along the port side of the boat. It's in one of the upper cabinets with the door that has the hinges on the bottom. I keep coffee cups there, and they always seem to collect fresh water. Have you heard of anyone with this problem who may have traced down the source of the leak?

Like you, I really like this boat and intend to keep it for quite some time.

Best regards,
Bob Gray
